Role Models—

Influence on Coach Mendo
Tim Collins (“Coach C”)

This information piece is special because it comes directly from my heart about a mentor, Coach Tim Collins, who has had a major impact in my life. I hope that all of you who have experienced Quick Handle understand that our program is far more then just basketball & skill development. It is about creating leaders & role models. Below is an example directly from me about how having true mentors in your life can make a tremendous difference in shaping and instilling leadership! Please enjoy this short testimonial and please take the time to click on the link below and check out this amazing man’s accomplishments. He will be the first to give Glory to God for the special legacy that has been created!!

I have so much to say about a man, a mentor and a friend that has made such a dramatic impact on my life. Coach C, God through you, I owe everything in regards to my basketball, both as a player and a coach!

As a player, you believed in me and allowed the talent & competitive fire inside of me to shine, and instilled in me the confidence to succeed as a basketball player both at the college and overseas pro level. Playing for you was a dream come true because I knew right away that you were a players coach, a great innovator and knew how to unleash talent.

As a coach, being under your leadership as an assistant coach for 3 years, I witnessed first hand why I believe you are simply one of the best coaches in America, whether at the small college or Division 1 level. I believe without a doubt, you are one of the best in-game tacticians I have ever witnessed. Your mind for the game, ability to communicate and charismatic personality are simply one of a kind. What I have witnessed personally (as your assistant coach) and then following you throughout the years in simply coming through in the “clutch” time and time again in tight game situatiions when it was all on the line has been simply amazing. You displayed the awesome balance of poise and confidence, as you would draw up strategies to pull off unbelievable victories.

You are truly a competitive warrior for the Lord, who simply believed that excellence for God should be the highest standard set for a Christian College coach. Your example and love for the young men under your care in the 30 plus years is a testament to your superb leadership. I, for one, owe you everything in relationship to how God used you to instill in me the proper Biblical characteristics of a Christian basketball coach. You helped lay a foundation in me that I will always be indebted to, as I witnessed first-hand your awesome philosophy and system in winning two National Christian College Championships. To this day, I never remove the “Championship Ring” from my finger, because it symbolizes the wars we went through together to win those championships and the enduring love that we carry to this day for each other.

Besides everything you did for me as a basketball coach, both at the college and overseas professional level (combined 19 years), you also are a major reason for the success God has blessed me with regarding Quick Handle. I am forever indebted to you Coach C and hold you in the highest esteem to the last breath I breathe. Thank you again for modeling the life of Christ as a coach, a husband and a father. If I could ever be half the man you are, I think God will be very pleased! I love you and look forward to many more great times together with you and your wife Linda and Teresa and myself. Enjoy the next stage of your journey because I know God will continue to use you in a mighty way.

Your Point Guard, Assistant Coach and Friend forever!
Mendo

HEAT- MOTIVATIONAL NEWSLETTER 2013
QH Summer Camps- Sign up Today & Receive Our Early Camp Discount!!

I love to use the word “Heat” because it reminds me of my favorite team, the Miami Heat. And also I enjoy the word “Heat” because to me, it implies positive energy, intensity, being invested and dominating. These are a few of the words that come to my mind when I think of “Heat”.

The opposite of “Heat” is cold. Cold to me implies indifference, not invested, giving up and defeated. Also when I think of “Heat” I think more about the process then the finished product. You see, our society is wired in such a crazy way, partly, I believe, because of insecurity; that wining at all costs is most important. The idea of “Heat” is more about the process, the day in and day out process of pushing oneself to limits that you never expected; crossing to another level of confidence; ushering in a new era of skill development that transcends into ultimate and continued success on the court. Many players are looking only for the big break, the ultimate prize, a championship without understanding the process; and because so few attain that level, many players become discouraged, despondent and give up. If they don’t give up they become mediocre with their work habits and their commitment. But always remember that mediocrity is generally always in bed with excuse making. Boy, the excuses are plentiful; “if you only knew my coach…….my situation…….. my injury……..my obstacles……..” and the list goes on and on. When you’re wrapped up in “Heat” and this motivational acronym that I will share with you, you are more focused on being the best you can be day in and day out. With this mindset you can rest assured that you are positioning yourself for ultimate success.

Think about the “HEAT” acronym as I break it down;

H- heart: Possessing and embodying “Heat” first and foremost is a player that has a huge heart. This type of heart is marked not only by just a hit & miss intensity level of one basketball game, but it is the daily process of a fighter and competitor that doesn’t take defeat lightly. A player full of Heat battles giving in every practice and game with everything in their heart!

E- energy: A “Heat” player has tremendous physical, mental and emotional energy that is projected around them at all the times. Excuses are not a part of this player’s mentality but they are constantly creating real dynamic energy through enthusiasm and empowerment towards their teammates. This energy is contagious and spreads throughout the team! In order to spread this type of energy, you must step out of your comfort zone, step out of the ordinary and take the initiative to be a leader and not a follower.

A- attitude: A “Heat” player comes with the right attitude and mindset of cooperation all the time. It is easy to have a good attitude when things are going your way but when faced with adversity not going your way; a possible injury, a slump, a losing streak or difficult times outside of basketball, this is the test of a true “Heat” attitude. Do you still have a team mentality? Are you still willing to sacrifice your all for your Faith, family & team? Or is this the time you are going to be negative and start to spread seeds of discord and negativity to others and ultimately effect the team? A “Heat” player is one that has a tremendous attitude that is infectious and supportive of the process of both individual and team success.

T- tenacious: A “Heat” player has a tenacious spirit that is reflected in a very aggressive and fighting manner on the court. I am not talking about playing dirty, but I am talking about a bulldog mentality that goes the extra mile and gives that extra effort to do what most other players are only willing to view but not participate. A tenacious “Heat” player comes up with those 50/50 loose balls; is willing to sacrifice their body and take a charge; dive for a loose ball; take a bow in the face to get a critical rebound; set a hard screen; drive with authority to the basket and not avoid contact. Are you a tenacious player or a passive and soft player?

You see, at the end of day, real people with basketball knowledge who really care and have genuine motives will evaluate you more on “Heat” which deals with ones character, effort and selfless play, then on just being a superstar and winning at all costs. If you follow and apply the “Heat” acronym and these principles, you will be well on the way to being the ultimate superstar and winner.

Make that decisive first move and commit to “Heat”!!

The Spartan Warrior

The Spartan Warrior Spirit

True winners are warriors not whiners! I hope this motivational newsletter gets you pumped up to go batte with fierceness on the court.

I don’t know how many of you watched the movie ‘300’. I certainly would not recommend it for children. It is violent and I do not advocate nor would I encourage any young person to view it. However, I found the movie fascinating in observing the warrior spirit that embodied the Spartan soldier.

I found three principles from this movie that I felt could be applied to every basketball player who is striving to be the best that they can be.

D-3 Acronym

Dedication; the level of commitment for a Spartan warrior was unprecedented. It began at an early age and continued on throughout life. This dedication was so complete and thorough that nothing could remove its level of focus and commitment. If you want to be the best at anything and specifically basketball, then you must be committed and dedicated with the utmost of everything that is within you.

Determination; Because of a Spartans unwavering dedication to discipline, determination to win and be successful was a natural byproduct. In fact, determination can best be evident through adversity. The Spartans were always outmatched and out manned in their battles. Yet their unwavering determination to win, based on their intense training and dedication pushed them to victory every time. You have to have single minded focus and determination to achieve your goal. Like the Spartans, don’t let anything or anybody tell you that you can’t achieve greatness!

Dependence; I know this characteristic at face value, sounds a little strange. But with the Spartan warrior, this principle is evident in their greatness. The Spartans depended on mentoring from their leaders, dependence upon their fellow warriors to have their back in battle and dependence upon the spirit and the code that they shared TOGETHER as ONE, that gave them a spirit to fight at a capacity greater than even their own abilities allowed. This principle is so important and cannot be overestimated! Many young basketball players do not rely and depend on your coaches, mentors and parents, to help you achieve your goals. A know-it-all attitude and a mind set that thinks you can achieve goals without the help of others is pure fantasy. When you are of one mind with those who truly care about you and want you to succeed and you partner with them and depend upon their wisdom and insight, you will put yourself in a great position to accomplish great things and achieve your goals & dreams.

Overachiever or Underachiever? The choice is yours. Apply the D-3 acronym for success!

Core Power

Motivational Newsletter

A Winners Mind-Set

Everyone wants to be a winner and a lot of people talk themselves up as a winner, but the reality is very few become winners. Winning and losing is not always defined by results, but more by a mentality. A winner’s mind-set is one that focuses on winning the war; and in order to achieve success it is being more concerned about the journey then individual battles. It is like having a strong core which is central to stamina, endurance, strong hamstrings and a strong back. Sometimes looks can be deceiving because a young player with very little body fat can take off his shirt and “wow”people with the visible signs of ripple muscles and a six pack. However, what is underneath those perceived muscles really defines ones core. Many players never spend the time or make the commitment to work on their core in such a way as to have a firm, strong, rock solid and second-to-none core. I use this as an example because in training and coaching for the past 20 years I have experienced numerous athletes that talk the talk and may even have their appearance of looking the part (having a strong core) but when push comes to shove they don’t have a firm core and a strong foundation.

This newsletter is more about the core power you have as an athlete trying to develop the winning mind-set. I believe the acronym CORE, if meditated on and activated with your goals will produce a foundation of long lasting success.

C-conditioning: core power is an athlete who has superior conditioning. He/she spends the time necessary to be in better shape than their teammates and opponents. You can’t just talk yourself into conditioning. It takes a relentless focus and effort daily to maximize all aspects of conditioning so that you have a superior advantage. You will know you have superior conditioning because of the quality time you spend pushing yourself to exhaustion. The results will be a winning mind-set properly positioned for continued success.

O-over-time mentality: core power has a focus on an over-time mentality that consists of doing just a little bit more in every situation. If you knew every game was going into overtime, how would you prepare yourself? Would you get to the gym a little earlier? Would you eat a little bit better? Would you modify your social life a little bit more? Would you put up a few more shots? Work on your ball-handling a little bit longer or condition just as little bit more? Would you be the first to the gym and the last to leave? This is the overtime mentality of success. Core power demands this type of commitment to excellence.

R-results oriented: though you understand that core power is first and foremost focused on a winners mindset more than winning itself, a core power player is always trying to better his/her results. You should track your progress, whether you are working on your skill set, conditioning or actual game competition. You should set up standards and goals that you can measure your success against. You should be results oriented in that you are always progressing and not regressing in your growth as a student/athlete and a winner.

E-energy: a core power player always finds a way to bring the internal energy necessary to compete at a high level. You should not be satisfied with yesterday’s performance and results or because you achieved some amazing goal. You should be grateful, but never satisfied or become complacent. You need a determined zoom focus to look ahead with enthusiasm toward accomplishing that core power winner’s mind-set. You know that if you bring consistent unrelenting energy, you will be able to maximize your efforts and produce amazing and consistent high level results. Energy is something that you have to guard, protect and value. You have to eat properly, get plenty of rest and make sure your harnessing all the energy possible in a positive and very purposeful way towards your core power.

I challenge you to fully engage in core power by applying the acronym and principles of CORE to its maximum possibilities. A winning mentality and mind-set is designed to produce consistent results for a long term basis. Be a winner and sign on for “core power”.

Go for it!!

Hello QH Family,

Well a night of God loving anointing. We played absolutely fearless and with so much fight. We jumped on them from the start and never let off the gas. The team executed the game plan perfectly. Played excellent on ball and team defense, ran and pushed the ball on every opportunity and shared the ball so well. Our professionals played great and Daryl had some off the chart highlight dunks. It was a fun and spectacular night and all glory goes to Jesus the King of Kings.

Thanks for you support and I miss all of you.
